You sell on bol with a business seller account. You need a registered company, a VAT number and a business bank account; sellers from other EU countries can also apply. After that, there are seven steps: create your account, choose products, arrange sourcing and fulfilment, build a strong listing, protect your price and the buy box, keep your seller performance in order, and grow with ads and automation.
Bol is the largest online store in the Netherlands and Belgium, and for many entrepreneurs it is their most important sales channel. Getting started is easy. Becoming profitable takes more: you compete with thousands of other sellers, often on exactly the same product.
In this guide you will find the steps from registration to your first sales, and what to watch for at each step. Each step links to a more detailed article on that topic.
Getting started is not difficult: registration takes a few days to a few weeks. Becoming successful is harder. Bol offers millions of products from tens of thousands of sellers, and on shared product pages only one seller gets the order button.
Three things make the difference: choosing the right products, knowing your margin per product and keeping your seller performance in order. Get those three right and you can build a profitable business on bol.
Bol only works with business sellers. Before you register, you need:
A registration in the trade register: the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK), the Belgian KBO, or the trade register of your own EU country
A VAT number from the country where your company is established
A business bank account in a SEPA country
A valid ID document
You then create a seller account on the bol partner platform and complete the verification. Make sure your company name and address match your trade register entry exactly; differences slow down the check. Sellers established outside the Netherlands and Belgium are also asked by bol to connect through a certified API partner. All requirements are covered in how to set up a bol seller account.
Choosing your products is the most important decision you make. A good product on bol has proven demand, little strong competition and at least 25% net margin after all costs. Decide on data, not on gut feeling: look at competitors' sales, search volume, price development and reviews.
How to approach this step by step is explained in product research on bol. In the Rylee product database you filter more than 4 million bol products on the criteria that matter to you.
Once you know what you want to sell, you look for a supplier. That can be a wholesaler for existing products, or a manufacturer if you want to build your own brand. Ask for samples, check that the supplier has the required documentation (such as CE declarations and safety information) and start with a small test order.
For shipping you have two options:
Ship yourself: you store your stock yourself and ship every order yourself. More control, more work. Read how shipping costs on bol work.
Fulfilment by bol (FBB, in Dutch LVB): you send your stock to a bol warehouse, and bol handles storage, shipping and returns. Less work and fast delivery, but you pay per product for storage and fulfilment.
If you sell an existing product, you join the existing product page and share it with other sellers. If you bring a new product or your own brand to market, you create the product page yourself. It determines whether customers find you and whether they buy.
Title: put the most important keywords and distinguishing features first. Use terms customers actually search for, and avoid keyword stuffing.
Images: sharp photos on a white background, complemented by lifestyle, detail and in-use images. Images are often the first thing a customer decides on.
Description: short and concrete. What is it, who is it for, what problem does it solve? Work relevant keywords naturally into the text.
Specifications: fill in all attributes completely. Bol gives your product information a quality score in your seller account; the more complete, the better you can be found.
Keep in mind that customers on bol shop in Dutch: your content needs to be in Dutch. Want help with your listing? Rylee helps with product listings.
When several sellers offer the same product, one of them gets the buy box: the default offer with the order button. That box drives most of your sales. It goes to the seller with the strongest combination of total price, delivery time, performance and stock. Read how to win the buy box without dropping below your margin.
Know your price floor per product: purchase price, commission, shipping or fulfilment costs and returns combined. The profit calculator works this out for you.
Bol continuously measures how you perform as a seller, including cancellations, on-time delivery, response time to customer questions and customer reviews. You can see where you stand in your seller account. Sellers who structurally fall below the standard lose the buy box and can eventually be restricted from selling.
The basics: answer customer questions within 24 hours, cancel as little as possible, deliver within your promised delivery time and process returns quickly. If things go wrong, bol's partner service can help you.
Once your first products are selling, the work shifts from setting up to scaling.
Advertising: with Sponsored Products you buy visibility in the search results. Read how to advertise on bol without wasting money.
Reviews: reviews increase your conversion. With review emails you ask customers for an honest review after their purchase.

1. Is selling on bol difficult?
Getting started is easy; becoming profitable takes more. Competition is strong, so the right product choice, a healthy margin and good seller performance make the difference.
2. Can I sell on bol as a private individual?
No. Bol only works with business sellers. You need a registration in the trade register and a VAT number from the country where your company is established.
3. Can I sell on bol from outside the Netherlands or Belgium?
Yes, if your company is registered in an EU country. You need a VAT number from that country, a bank account in a SEPA country and a valid ID. Bol asks sellers from other EU countries to connect through a certified API partner. Your product content must be in Dutch.
4. How long does it take for my account to be approved?
After registering, your company details are verified. Expect a few days to a few weeks, depending on how quickly the check is completed.
5. What can I sell on bol?
Almost all product categories are open to business sellers. Which products have potential is something you determine with product research: look at demand, competition and margin.
6. What are you not allowed to sell on bol?
Prohibited items include weapons and ammunition, counterfeit products, illegal substances and products that infringe intellectual property. For some categories, such as medicines, alcohol, tobacco and food supplements with health claims, extra requirements apply or prior approval is needed. Always check the bol partner platform for the current list.
7. How does VAT work when selling on bol?
The price you set includes VAT. Bol does not pay VAT on your behalf: you file your own VAT returns on your sales. If you sell to consumers in other EU countries, the OSS scheme may apply. Rylee automatically creates VAT invoices per order.
8. When does bol pay out?
Bol pays out periodically for orders that have been delivered and whose cooling-off period has passed. You will find a full overview in your seller account under Finance.
9. Do I have to use Fulfilment by bol?
No, you can also ship yourself. Fulfilment by bol saves work and ensures fast delivery, but costs storage and fulfilment fees per product. Calculate both options before you choose.
