Winning the Kaufland buy box
Short answer: Kaufland runs an EAN-driven catalogue: several sellers offer the same product on one product page. The buy box — the default offer carrying the order button — goes to one of them. What decides it is the total price including shipping, delivery time, your seller performance and your availability. Lowest price alone isn't enough.
The product page belongs to the product, not the seller. Offer the same article as three others and you share one page. Kaufland designates one offer as the default; the rest sit in the list of other sellers and sell considerably less.
The precise weighting in the Seller Portal.
Total price including shipping. Not your sale price, but what the customer pays. €24.95 with free delivery beats €22.95 plus €3.95 shipping.
Delivery time. A shorter, credible delivery promise counts. Fulfillment by Kaufland and Kaufland Shipping Services help here.
Seller performance. Cancellations, late shipments, customer ratings and response time.
Availability. No stock, no buy box — and repeated stockouts prevent you from building position.
"Lowest price wins." Total price weighs heavily, but not alone. A seller consistently undercutting the market and still not winning usually has a delivery or performance problem.
"The buy box belongs to one seller." It shifts with price, stock and performance. Steer on your share over time, not on a single snapshot.
Check | Action |
|---|---|
In stock? | Replenish; the box returns |
Total price including shipping? | Compare with the current winning offer, not the cheapest in the list |
Delivery time? | Shorten it, or move to a faster shipping route |
Performance metrics? | Bring cancellations and late shipments down |
Cheaper elsewhere? | Align prices across your channels |
Winning the buy box is only a win if the offer that wins it still earns margin. Drop from €24.95 to €22.45 and your contribution margin per product falls. Volume may grow, until your competitor follows and you do it again.
So set your floor per product before every price move: purchase price plus commission plus shipping plus a returns reserve plus the margin you want to keep. Calculate that commission on the gross price including shipping — see Kaufland seller fees. Whether automation helps you hold it is covered in Kaufland repricer.
Contribution margin per product with your own costs, so you know your floor before you drop.
Orders, sales and stock across Kaufland, Amazon, bol, Shopify and WooCommerce in one overview — stock is a buy box factor, and price misalignment across channels shows immediately.

Does the lowest price always win? No. Total price weighs heavily, but delivery time, performance and availability count too.
Why did I lose the buy box? Usually: out of stock, a total price above the winning offer, or a longer delivery time.
Do I hold it if I'm the only seller? Then you share the page with nobody and there's no contest for the box.
