Winning the Amazon Buy Box: the six factors that actually count

Winning the Amazon Buy Box

Short answer: The Buy Box (or featured offer) is the purchase panel on the product page holding "Add to Basket" and "Buy Now". When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon awards that panel to one of them based on six factors: total price, shipping method and delivery time, seller performance, stock availability, returns and customer service, and selling history on that product. Offering the lowest price is emphatically not enough.

Why the Buy Box exists

On Amazon a product page belongs to the product, not the seller. Offer the same article as five others and you're all on one page. Amazon doesn't want to burden the customer with that choice, so it designates one offer as the default. The sellers who don't hold it appear under "Other sellers" — and sell very little.

The six factors

1. Total price, not your sale price. Amazon looks at what the customer pays: price plus shipping. €24.95 with free delivery beats €22.95 with €3.95 shipping.

2. Shipping method and delivery time. The most underestimated factor. FBA offers regularly win against cheaper self-shipped ones because delivery is faster and guaranteed.

3. Seller performance. Order defect rate, pre-fulfilment cancellations, late shipments and valid tracking.

4. Stock. No stock, no Buy Box. Run out repeatedly and you never build position.

5. Returns and customer service. Response time and returns handling count. FBA largely takes this over.

6. Selling history on that product. A seller with months of stable performance on the same ASIN starts ahead of a newcomer with an identical offer.

Two misconceptions

"Lowest price wins." No. Price is one of six factors. A seller consistently undercutting the market and still not winning has a performance or delivery problem, not a price problem.

"The Buy Box belongs to one seller." No. It rotates. Two sellers with comparable scores share it over time, weighted by relative strength — so your Buy Box share is a percentage, not a yes or no.

When there's no Buy Box at all

Sometimes Amazon shows no purchase panel, only a seller list. Common causes: the price sits too high against a reference price elsewhere; no offer meets the minimum standards; the product is restricted or flagged; or the account uses the Individual plan, which isn't Buy Box eligible.

This hits own-brand sellers too: sell the same item cheaper on another channel and it can suppress your Buy Box on Amazon.

Five-minute diagnosis

Check

Action if it fails

On the Professional plan?

Without it, you're not eligible

In stock?

Replenish; the panel returns

Total price including shipping?

Compare with the current Buy Box offer, not the cheapest listing

Delivery time?

Shorter handling time, or FBA for this product

Performance metrics?

Defects under 1%, cancellations under 2.5%, late shipments under 4%

Cheaper elsewhere?

Align prices across channels

All green and still no Buy Box? Usually selling history. You close that with time and consistency, not with a price cut.

The calculation you must not skip

Winning the Buy Box is only a win if the offer that won it still earns margin. Drop from €24.95 to €22.45 and your contribution margin per unit falls from €6.80 to €4.30. Volume may quadruple and total margin may grow — until your competitor follows and you do it again. Two rounds later you sell maximum volume at a margin that no longer covers your fixed costs.

So set your floor per product before every price move: purchase price plus referral fee plus fulfilment plus a returns reserve plus the margin you insist on keeping. Whether automation helps you hold that floor is a separate question — see Amazon repricer.

How Rylee helps

Amazon shows you whether you hold the Buy Box. Your own figures show what it earns you.

  • Costs, margins and contribution margin per product with your real purchase and cost lines, so you know your floor before you drop, not after.

  • One shop analytics overview with orders, sales and stock across Amazon (all European marketplaces), bol, Kaufland, Shopify and WooCommerce — stock is a Buy Box factor, and you immediately see where your price is out of line across channels.

  • Consolidated P&L, so you see what a price round did to total margin, not just to revenue.

  • AI Advisor to ask in plain language what happened to margin after a price change and which products are losing it.

  • Scheduled reports and exports for a fixed margin check each period.

  • Amazon Legends and Ecom Legends to work through pricing strategy with other sellers.

Try Rylee free for 14 days and know your floor before you drop.

Frequently asked questions

Does the lowest price always win the Buy Box? No. Total price, delivery, performance, stock, service and history are weighed together. An FBA offer regularly wins at a higher price.

Why did I lose my Buy Box? Most often: out of stock, total price too high versus the current winning offer, longer delivery time, or slipping performance metrics.

Do I have the Buy Box selling my own brand? Yes, you share the page with nobody — though it can still be suppressed if your price sits far above your price on other sales channels.

Can I share the Buy Box with a competitor? Yes. With comparable scores it rotates, so steer on Buy Box share over time rather than a single snapshot.
